If you find yourself in the Rioja Alavesa, a visit to the Poblado de La Hoya is a must. This is a major archaeological site dating from the first millennium BC. Its museum contains reconstructions of the dwellings, built with adobe and stone and covered with grass, that were found within the village walls and shows how this settlement developed over the ages. Excavations have shown that the economy of its inhabitants was based on agriculture and livestock breeding.

There is archaeological evidence that Alava has been inhabited since prehistoric times. All over the province you will find well-preserved megalithic monuments. The Aizkomendi dolmens in the village of Eguilaz; the Sorginetxe dolmen in the village of Arrízala and “La Chabola de la Hechicera”, in Elvillar. You can also visit settlements inhabited since their origins in the Iron Age until the Middle Ages such as the Castro de Lastra, in Caranca, and the Castro de Buradón, in Salinillas de Buradón.
